From a young age I was always enthralled with designing and making things,
first with my father (a very practical engineer) and then with my grandfather who taught me the skills of furniture making.
Having a background in engineering at Trinity College Dublin,
followed by a period studying furniture design and making at the world renowned Parnham College in Dorset,
England, I spent a number of years working in sustainable engineering and designing for international furniture studios
before returning to Ireland to establish my own studio in 2015.
Based from this rural studio in Newcastle, Co. Dublin,
I work with clients to create timeless pieces for their home or space that resonate their unique story.
For me the process of creating is about making connections, with the client’s story, the material,
the sculptural elements of the piece itself.
Through weaving these together, I believe it is possible to achieve a resonance in a piece
(a bit like composing a song) that can impart a feeling of joy or happiness.
" bedside reading cabinet "
For the avid reader, the bedside reading cabinet integrates a bookshelf into the wild Irish ash top.
Underneath is a tray for storing everyday bits and pieces and below this a spacious drawer.
The cabinet's back leg is a reading lamp, which is fully adjustable and can be used as both an up light and down light.
The switch is easily accessible at the back of this leg.
" flop flip table "
Dimensions: 79cm diameter by 40cm high
The table is handmade in beautiful wild Irish ash
and finished with a hardwearing, natural, hand rubbed oil.
The glass is toughened safety glass making it safe to handle.
Designed for smaller living spaces,
the flop flip table consists of two identical leg components.
One is flipped over and simply slotted together
to form the base of the table.
The toughened safety glass top has 3 brass pins
that lock the table together and also serve as the hook.
Simply hang it on your wall when you need that extra space.
The wild Irish ash trees are sourced from Co.
Wicklow and are either windblown or have reached their end of life
and need to be taken down.
They are unmanaged "wild" trees
giving them a much more interesting character of grain,
pattern and colours as they develop branches naturally
and twist in the sun.
Dimensions: diameter 82cm, height 45cm.
made from air-dried,
solid Irish birch sourced from a local sawmill in Co
" phoenix I table "
The design is inspired by the craft of barrel making
with the base being made from 18 staves and the circular top acting
as the hoop that locks the staves together.
This design accommodates any natural shrinkage
that may occur in the air-dried staves.
The table comes flat-packed
and no screws or glue are used in the table's assembly.
Three wooden bungs are used to locate and fix the top.
Each of the staves are hand planed to give a natural sheen / finish. Typically this finish is left natural,
although a hand rubbed oil finish is also possible.
