The Work I am presenting is in form and function a 16 foot cedar strip canoe.
I have inspired from the traditional form of an open two-person river tripping,
Canadian style canoe.
Certain forms were then modified.
The rocker (hull curvature from stern to bow) is exaggerated
and the width is augmented at the mid-point,
to present an even more sculptural object reflecting the fluidity of form
and its direct relation to water.
By doing this it also creates a canoe that is well adapted to coastline tripping in the sea and remains proficient on both river and lake.
This handcrafted canoe built from Western red cedar and Irish ash,
offers a sculptural object of design with a purpose and function behind the decision
and execution of every curve and contour.
A combination of form, function, craftsmanship and aesthetic appreciation.
Belgian Chair Series

When coming back from a morning of fishing on the river, my father was asked, “Did you catch anything?”
he replied, “They call it fishing, not catching”.
The Belgian Chair Series (series of six chairs) reflects this philosophy.
The act of sitting on a river bank, a jetty or pier stretching out on to the sea or a lake,
is a time of observation, listening, smelling, waiting, reflecting, existing…
Our time spent sitting on a chair, at a dining table or desk is also filled with many of the same experiences. We observe our surroundings and the people we are with, we wait to be served,
we enjoy the scent of foods,
we study and reflect either in front of computers or with writing pads or sketch books.
The Belgian Chair series works with empty space as well as occupied space.
The positive and the negative. With references to the vernacular mid-century western European.
The simple form using fine sections of wood, with traditionally assembled joints provides comfort,
simplicity and elegance.
The wood I have chosen is Irish oak,
local to the location of my workshop and is finished with a natural linseed oil.
