" Woven ring "
47mm x 120mm (height) x 26mm (across pod)
Sterling silver and 18ct white gold woven ring on hand
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a jeweller and since finishing my degree,
at the University of South Australia in 1990, I have been dedicated to my jewellery practice.
Designing and making one off pieces for exhibitions provides me the opportunity for freedom of expression.
My woven work is informed by my love of traditional crafts, taught to me by my grandmother, and weaving,
particularly Indigenous Australian basketry which I find inspiring.
Part of the main structure of my woven rings becomes the loom on which I weave.
A sense of rhythm is created during the construction of each piece, and as I wrap my fine silver and gold strands around and around,
I find the process itself both enjoyable and meditative.
The work seems to grow in front of me and take on a life of its own, frequently suggesting new directions to me.
When I hold a finished piece, it reflects both my love of processes and the elements I find fascinating in crafts and jewellery,
particularly the detail you find on the close examination of a piece.
Ultimately I just love working with metal.
